Skin Burns

Degrees and Ways to Treat them

Burns are divided into 3 types, depending on how serious they are and how much of the skin they affect.

First-degree burn:
The skin gets red and feels very hot and painful. Only the outer layer of the skin is affected, and it rarely leaves a permanent mark.

Second-degree burn:
The skin is red, painful, and feels like it’s burning. Blisters of various sizes appear. This type of burn affects both the outer and the inner layer of the skin.

With the right care, the skin eventually heals from first- and second-degree burns. Consult your doctor or pharmacist to recommend you a moisturizing, repairing cream.

Third-degree burn:
The skin is completely destroyed down to the deepest layers. The area often looks charred (black) or white. You might not feel any pain because the nerves in that spot have been destroyed. Third-degree burns are an emergency and usually require a hospital visit.

Call a doctor immediately if:

- You have a very serious burn.

- A first- or second-degree burn covers a large part of your body or if the pain comes back after feeling better for a while.

- You have a burn on your eyes, mouth, ears, or genitals.

- A piece of clothing or jewelry is stuck to the burn, as this can lead to a serious infection.
